My background

My childcare experience began when I moved to Finland in 2012 to be an Au Pair to a Finnish family in Hämeenlinna. I didn’t speak a word of Finnish and their 5 year old quickly became my caretaker, language teacher and best friend. Since then, I’ve worked as a full-time private nanny within 6 more families as well as having had countless shorter term arrangements as a babysitter, extra pair of hands around the house or reliable family friend! During this time I studied Finnish and in 2018 started at Helsinki University studying Finnish Language, Literature and Politics.

Passion for language

Early foreign language exposure is something I’ve held a special interest in since studying early years language acquisition during collage. Since then, I’ve gained a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification and completed various linguistics-related courses.

While I do have experience teaching in a more formal one-to-one setting as well as having taught small groups, I have found that one-to-one language exposure in a relaxed, play atmosphere is the best and most effective way to give a child a head start in their language learning. As I myself have a passion for everything language-related, I enjoy passing this enthusiasm on and inspiring the next generation, encouraging them to experiment and have fun with the new language as much as possible. I believe that an early awareness of foreign languages instills important open-mindedness and cultural awareness in children, promoting inclusivity and a healthy world view. I also believe that being familiar with even just the very basics of English from an early age gives the child a headstart.

My values

By nature I’m a playful person but I also believe in healthy boundaries. I value consistency and good communication between parents and childcare providers, and I place great importance on developing a genuine relationship with children.

My main philosophy is that happy parents = happy children, so go on that date night or start that new hobby and trust that you’re leaving your children in responsible hands. Not only will you get the time you need but your children will have a new friend that they love playing with by the time you come home!

What’s the difference between English Immersion sessions and English-speaking babysitting?

During the English sessions a parent/carer is at home too, but for babysitting I am the sole responsible carer. I make this distinction because I cannot be a responsible carer if there is a language barrier. Whether I offer English-speaking babysitting depends on your child’s language level and e.g. parents’ language.

During my English sessions the focus is on language and language learning rather than simply communication by any means necessary as it is with babysitting. If you have any more questions about this, feel free to ask!

I currently don’t, simply due to lack of time and resources. I do however offer homework help and e.g. conversation practice to older children as a supplement to their school studies.

I’m happy to babysit up to 3 children at a time. If more than 1 child is under 2 years old, please contact me and we can arrange things directly

Good question! The children are often completely unaware that I speak Finnish! I work hard to keep this little secret under wraps to encourage children to communicate in English as much as possible.

I can actually also offer beginners Finnish language exposure too and this is something I’m hoping on expanding in coming years. A large part of my university degree is centered around teaching Finnish as a foreign language and having learned the language myself, I have a very thorough understanding of it and how to go about learning it. So this is definitely negotiable - get in touch and we can have a chat about it!

I can provide parents with lots of links to all sorts of resources for learning English. (NB A lot of readily available materials are geared towards children who read/write, thought I try my best to find those that don’t!). I’m also happy to arrive to English sessions armed with my own colouring sheets, activity sheets and game ideas etc.

I’ve often found however that children prefer playing with their own toys and deciding themselves what’s on the agenda, but for older children especially having resources such as YouTube videos ready can bring a lot to the session.
